About Corolla 

In the geography of the Outer Banks, the area from Pine Island to the end of the paved road is considered Corolla. Originally just a tiny village centered around the lighthouse built in the 1874, Corolla has exploded in popularity since the late 1980s. 

Ocean Sands was one of the first communities to be developed, offering affordable vacation homes on the ocean side of Highway 12. Next came Whalehead, also on the oceanside and farther north. Whalehead offers very easy beach access from most homes, as well as plenty of parking near the beach accesses.

Soon communities with lots of amenities started to appear. Corolla Light has an amazing oceanfront pool complex, as well as soundfront pool and a huge soundside sports center. The Currituck Club brought Corolla’s only golf course, designed by Rees Jones and surrounded by some of the finest homes in the area.

Monteray Shores, Ocean Hill, Crown Point and Spindrift all followed by 1990. Soon Pine Island started a new trend toward larger homes, including the first 10 bedroom home in the area.

Local developer Buck Thorton created the oceanside community Buck Island in the 90s, as well as the Tim Buck II shopping village on the soundside. Mr. Thornton was instrumental in bringing about the restoration of the Whalehead Club, a 1930s hunt club owned by a Rhode Island sugar magnate and his eccentric wife, after it had lain empty and abandoned for years. Now Whalehead is known not only as a stunning wedding venue, but is actually studied an outstanding example of American Art Nouveau architecture.

Corolla has now matured to the point of having two supermarkets, lots of fun shops and many wonderful restaurants. But the old charm can still be found on the grounds of the Whalehead club, the restored Village, and the red brick lighthouse. Driving on the 4×4 beach north of Corolla is a wonderful experience for vacationers of all ages. There are no permit requirements for driving on the beach. However, if you plan to park on the beach and stay a while to enjoy fishing or just relaxing, please be aware there is a beach parking permit required between May and the first Saturday of October. To alleviate congestion, Currituck County has limited permit sales to a maximum of 300 per week during this time.
