Imagine all this home has seen and been through as you sit on the wide expansive covered porches and smell the salty ocean air and listen to the waves as they soothe and comfort your soul. Tankard has plenty of room and modern conveniences for you to have the vacation you've been waiting for. Put away those cell phones and just sit back and relax and let the magic of this home take you back in time.
The Historic District in Nags Head is one of the few areas that retains its original character with original cottages whose shapes, textures and colors and detail with the somber gray-brown colors, sweeping gable roofs, and expansive porches set them apart. The Nags Head Beach Cottage Row Historic District has been on the National Register of Historic Places for almost 40 years. The first of the 36 homes began construction in the mid-1800s, many before the Civil War. Most homes began as shacks, built from wood scavenged from the beachfront, leftover from shipwrecks. Since that time though, most of the homes have undergone major renovations.

We had a great family vacation at Tankard. The house is spacious and the wraparound porches were wonderful. We could always find a breeze blowing on one of the built in corner benches while we enjoyed the beautiful view of the almost private beach just steps from the house. We were here for the July 4th week and frequently we were the only people in our line of sight on the uncrowded beach, as public beach access is over a quarter of a mile away. There is plenty of parking and the location is just minutes away from several grocery stores, outlet malls, and fun activities for the kids, yet we were never aware of any highway noise. The outdoor showers, cloths line, downstairs grill, ice maker and extra refrigerator are all examples of some of the nice modern conveniences in this historic home. The air conditioner was effective even on one day that reached into the 90s. The team at Village Realty was helpful and welcoming. We would like to extend a special thank you to Laura Payne and her team for the welcome basket and the little sand toys for my grandson! He used them all week. We will definitely be using Village Realty for any future stay in this area.
