Planning an OBX food crawl? This guide covers the hottest new openings, legendary local favorites, sunset drink spots, and the dishes first-time visitors should not skip.
The Outer Banks dining scene has changed a lot over the last couple of years. New cocktail lounges, chef-driven restaurants, modern beach bars, and craft breweries are opening alongside long-running seafood shacks and old-school local institutions that people have been returning to for decades. It's that mix, really, that gives the OBX food scene so much character right now.
In this guide, I've rounded up the new places locals are talking about, along with the OBX favorites that still deserve the hype, waterfront classics, and the dishes and drinks you should not miss if it's your first time visiting the OBX.

New OBX Openings You'll Want on Your Radar (2025-2026)
Theodosia, Duck
Seafood and Southern classics interpreted with a more refined touch.
One of the biggest restaurant openings in the Outer Banks recently came from Chef Vivian Howard at the Sanderling Resort. Theodosia sits right on the Currituck Sound with massive floor-to-ceiling windows that make sunset reservations a must if you want an extra special and romantic dining experience.
Expect locally sourced seafood and Southern classics interpreted with a more refined, chef-driven touch than your standard beach spot.
Must-tries: Shrimp Burger, Caviar Roll, Tuna Tartare, Shrimp & Grits Soufflé, Surf & Turf, and their incredible Lemon Pie or Sticky Figgy for a sweet ending.
OBX Gyro, Kill Devil Hills
Greek & Turkish street food.
This new 2026 addition to the OBX dining scene immediately stood out because its cuisine is something you do not usually find here: Greek and Turkish street food.
The shawarma, gyros, and doner kebabs are shaved directly from the spit and served in wraps, bowls, or platters with house-made sauces. OBX Gyro has quickly become the go-to spot if you want a break from coastal seafood flavors or a casual lunch stop after the beach.
Must-tries: I highly recommend the chicken shawarma wrap or the mixed shawarma bowl. For sauces, the sweet-and-sour and yogurt sauces are excellent.
Shaka's Beach Bar & Grill, Nags Head
Strong cocktails and bold seafood dishes.
Shaka's Beach Bar & Grill channels more of a West Coast surf-bar vibe than the classic Outer Banks seafood shack setup, and it has been getting plenty of local attention thanks to its strong cocktails and bold seafood dishes.
The hand-pressed crushes are what many people initially order, but locals also strongly recommend the craft cocktails.
Best orders: Thai Chilli Calamari, Loaded Nachos, Captain's Combo, Seafood Trifecta, Ahi Tuna Tower, Famous Fish Tacos, and the Seafood Boil. The orange and key lime crushes are incredibly refreshing, while cocktails like the Shipwreck and Wet Woody are also worth trying.
1903 Bar & Kitchen, Kill Devil Hills
A modernized dive bar serving cocktails and pub fare.
This new spot in Kill Devil Hills is like a modernized dive bar with much better cocktails than you would expect and great pub fare. The late-night atmosphere is a big draw for both locals and visitors, especially for those looking for something livelier after dinner. The place is unpretentious, casual, and has a large bar and pool table for extra fun.
Worth ordering: Appetizers like the Pork Belly Egg Rolls and Fried Pickle Spears are great companions to any of their drinks, and the Carolina BBQ Burger topped with pulled pork is a must-try. Their pizza flights are also highly recommended. For drinks, the local beers on tap are all great.
Huanchaco Lounge, Kill Devil Hills
A blend of lounge culture with wellness trends.
One of the more unusual openings in the OBX recently, Huanchaco mixes lounge culture with wellness trends. The drink menu includes sake cocktails, adaptogenic drinks, mocktails, and over 20 beers on tap.
There's food, too. They serve delicious tapas featuring flavors ranging from Mediterranean to Korean.
Must-tries: The chicken samosas, cheese board, and Korean Crispy Corndog. Drinks worth ordering include the Nikkei Sour, Lavender Fizz, and Chaco Margarita.
The Local OBX, Corolla
Corolla's newest restaurant, bar, and brewery.
Opened in May 2026, this is Corolla's newest restaurant, bar, and brewery. The menu is diverse with a great variety of sandwiches, seafood dishes, and great beer.
Worth ordering: Grilled Shrimp Po'boy, Fish Tacos, Crab Cake Sandwich, Fried Pork Chop Sandwich, and the Beer Cheese Swirls.

OBX Classics That Still Deserve the Hype
- Kill Devil Grill (Kill Devil Hills): This local favorite remains one of the most recommended restaurants in the Outer Banks. The restaurant operates inside an old diner car, the food is scratch-made, the staff is extremely friendly and warm, and people line up for their Cheesesteak Egg Rolls, Southern Fried Chicken, Bone-in Pork Chop, Key Lime Pie, and other delicacies.
- Mama Kwan's Tiki Bar & Grill (Kill Devil Hills): Mama Kwan's Tiki Bar & Grill has been an OBX institution for years. This island-style casual spot is famous for its Mama's World Famous Fish Tacos, but locals also rave about the Mama's Hawaiian Pork Plate.
- Tortugas Lie (Nags Head): Tortugas Lie is a go-to casual spot in the OBX for flavorful Caribbean-inspired dishes, generous portions, vibrant décor, and an outdoor patio where you can chat with locals and catch the breeze coming from the sea. The Jamaican Jerk Beef and Coco Loco Chicken are some of the big stars on the menu.
- Art's Place (Kitty Hawk): Still one of the great dive bars in the OBX. Upstairs, you can grab refreshing drinks at their deck bar with ocean views and try their famous hamburgers, hand-cut fries, made-to-order breakfasts, and in-season local seafood dishes.
- Ocean Front Grille (Corolla): Always a good idea for special occasions. Ocean Front Grille boasts stunning sea views and a menu packed with classic coastal delicacies such as Mahi Mahi sandwiches, crab cakes, fried oysters, and tuna steaks.
Best Waterfront Bars & Sunset Drink Spots
- Fish Heads Bar & Grill (Nags Head): If you only do one classic beach bar in the OBX, make it this one. Fish Heads sits directly on the Outer Banks Pier, meaning you are essentially drinking over the Atlantic Ocean. The atmosphere is incredibly casual and exactly what many people imagine when they picture an Outer Banks local spot.
- Miller's Waterfront Restaurant (Nags Head): For sunsets, this is one of the best choices in the OBX. Because Miller's overlooks the sound instead of the ocean, the sunset views are especially dramatic. Another big draw here is the superb House Specialty Fish Sandwich and the outdoor picnic tables during golden hour.
- Outer Banks Brewing Station (Kill Devil Hills): Outer Banks Brewing Station, the first wind-powered brewpub in the United States, should be on anyone's itinerary while visiting the Outer Banks. Amazing local beer, the Pub Burger, fish sandwich, and carrot cake for dessert are some of the stars of the menu at this incredibly entertaining local hangout.

What First-Time Visitors Should Absolutely Eat in the OBX
If this is your first time in the Outer Banks, these are the signature dishes and drinks you should not leave without trying.
- Fish Tacos: Fish tacos are almost mandatory in the OBX. The versions at Mama Kwan's Tiki Bar & Grill and Tortugas Lie are among the most recommended on the islands.
- Painkiller Cocktails: The Painkiller is basically the unofficial beach cocktail of the Outer Banks. You will find versions everywhere, but Fish Heads Bar & Grill does one of the classics.
- Peel-and-Eat Shrimp: Simple, messy, beachy, and perfect with cold beer. The happy hour shrimp special at Fish Heads Bar & Grill has become an OBX ritual for many returning visitors.
- Cheesesteak Egg Rolls: One of the signature comfort-food dishes of the Outer Banks at this point. Get them at Kill Devil Grill.
- Fried Oyster Po' Boy: A proper coastal Carolina order. Captain Andy's in Nags Head is especially known for it.
- Biscuits & Gravy: The provocatively named Biscuits N Porn in Nags Head is one of the classic breakfast stops for sausage gravy biscuits and oversized chicken biscuits.
- Local Rum: Stopping by Outer Banks Distilling for Kill Devil Rum tastings is part of many OBX itineraries now. The Pecan Rum is particularly memorable.
