Dog-friendly Restaurants in the OBX

Exploring the Outer Banks' culinary scene is a delight for both you and your pet. Many local restaurants understand that dogs are part of the family and offer pet-friendly dining options. When dining out with your furry friend on the OBX, you'll discover a variety of pet-friendly restaurants that provide both delicious cuisine and a welcoming atmosphere. Below, I've rounded up a list of seven establishments where you and your pet can enjoy a great meal together.

Heads up: Remember to check with each restaurant for their specific pet policies, as some may have restrictions or guidelines. Additionally, it's courteous to bring a leash and ensure your dog is well-behaved during your dining experience.

1.
Fish Heads Bar & Grill (Nags Head)

Fish Head's Bar & Grill is a favorite among pet parents. It combines a fantastic seafood menu with a laid-back, pet-friendly vibe, complete with waterfront views and an outdoor deck where your pup can soak up the sun.

2.
Mulligan's Raw Bar & Grille (Nags Head)

This coastal gem in Nags Head serves up fresh seafood and tasty sandwiches while warmly welcoming your furry companions. Enjoy your meal with a view of the Roanoke Sound as your pet relaxes beside you on the outdoor deck, making the experience even better.

3.
Sooey's BBQ & Rib Shack (Corolla & Nags Head)

Serving up some of the best BBQ sandwiches on the Outer Banks, Sooey's BBQ & Rib Shack is the go-to spot for a mouthwatering, pet-friendly meal. Savor the smoky flavors of their barbecue favorites while your four-legged companion relaxes beside you in the outdoor seating area.

4. Beachcombers Tiki Hut (Kill Devil Hills)

Feel the ocean breeze and kick back at the open-air Tiki Hut, a laid-back beachside bar with unbeatable ocean views. Grab a cold tropical drink, dig into favorites like Fresh Fish Tacos, an Ahi Poke Bowl, or a juicy Wagyu Burger, and enjoy the easygoing vibe as the waves roll in. It's the perfect spot to chill, refuel, and soak up the Outer Banks atmosphere.

5.
Steamers (Southern Shores)

Steamers Restaurant is a local favorite known for its fresh seafood and steamed specialties, and it's as welcoming to pets as it is to people. Grab a table on the outdoor patio overlooking the Roanoke Sound, where you can enjoy the view while your pup lounges happily by your side.

6.
Outer Banks Brewing Station (Kill Devil Hills)

Craving a cold craft beer and some seriously good farm-to-table eats? Outer Banks Brewing Station has you covered, and your pup's welcome, too! Grab a seat on the patio, order a local brew, and dig into something delicious while your furry sidekick chills by your feet. The vibe's laid-back, the food's top-notch, and the dog-friendly energy make it a must-stop for anyone exploring the OBX with Fido.

7.
EVEN.TIDE (Duck)

Eventide keeps things simple: fresh local ingredients, coastal flavors, and a relaxed vibe that feels just right. The seafood's excellent, the seasonal dishes always hit the spot, and the view of the sound at sunset ties it all together. It's the kind of place you'll leave full, happy, and already planning to come back.

Beach Days with Your Pup

Here are the pet-friendly beaches across the OBX and a few rules to keep in mind before hitting the sand and enjoying a day under the North Carolina sun.

Duck

Dogs are allowed on the beach unleashed, but as a matter of public safety and courtesy, they should be under the watchful eye and contact of their owner. Duck beach accesses are privately owned by individual Homeowners Associations, and access is limited to Homeowner group residents and guests.

Southern Shores

Dogs are allowed on the beach before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m. from May 15 to September 15. Dogs must be on leashes no longer than 10 feet. All pet waste must be collected immediately and deposited in appropriate containers. The same rules apply during all hours in the off-season.

Kitty Hawk

Dogs are allowed on the beach and must display a current rabies tag. The owner/handler must remove feces and possess a bag/container for waste removal at all times. From the Friday before Memorial Day until the day after Labor Day, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., dogs must be on a leash not exceeding 12 feet. Dogs may be taken off the leash only if they will not disturb other people on the beach and must be controlled by the handler, who must remain within 30 feet of the dog at all times. The leash must be with the owner/handler at all times.

Kill Devil Hills

Between Memorial Day and Labor Day of each year, no dogs shall be permitted on the public beach between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. unless being used to aid a handicapped person. At all other times, no dogs shall be permitted on the public beaches except upon a leash and under the control of the owner or handler.

Nags Head

Dogs are allowed on the beach year-round as long as they are restrained by a leash not exceeding 10 feet.

Manteo

Any animal off the premises of the custodian shall be restrained by a leash, cord, or chain not exceeding six feet in length, held by a person who is physically able to control the animal unless such animal is restrained by voice control. For specific business dog code inquiries, check their listing on our website.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Dogs are allowed on the beach year-round if they are restrained with a leash 6 feet or less at all times.

Helpful Tips for Beach Days

  1. Leash Laws: Familiarize yourself with local leash laws. Some beaches may require dogs to be on a leash, while others have designated leash-free areas.

  2. Clean Up: Always carry waste bags and clean up after your dog. Many beach access points provide waste stations for your convenience.

  3. Hydration: Be sure to bring plenty of fresh water for your pets. Dogs can easily become dehydrated on the beach and will need plenty of water. Do not allow your pet to drink salt water. When a dog ingests too much salt water, it can lead to an upset GI tract and result in diarrhea and vomiting.

  4. Sun Protection: Just like you, your dog can get sunburned. Consider dog-friendly sunblock for sensitive areas like noses and ears. Provide shade for your pet if you plan to stay on the beach for a long period of time.

  5. Protect Your Dog's Feet: Hot sand and pavement can burn the pads on your dog's feet. Plan walks for the cooler times of day.

  6. Fish Hooks: Beware of allowing your pet near fish hooks. The need for a vet visit for the removal of fish hooks is a common occurrence at beach locations.

  7. Respect Wildlife: Keep a safe distance from wildlife, including nesting birds and sea turtles.
