Up in Corolla
Today I decided to come up and work in our Corolla office. This is actually where I started my career with Village Realty and this location holds a special place in my heart. I truly could not remember the last time I was actually up this way so it was a treat to ride up with my co-worker, Krista. The drive was and is beautiful...driving through Duck Village is also a treat and then you get to that stretch between Duck and our office on the grounds of The Currituck Club and you have wonderful views and that "peaceful, easy feeling".
The history of Corolla dates back many years. "Corolla" was originally the name for a village near the Currituck Beach Lighthouse.
Please note, and this is important to us "locals", that the usual pronunciation of Corolla stresses the second syllable like "all" (Kuh-RAH-Luh, /kəˈrɑːlə/). Some visitors pronounce Corolla the same as they pronounce the name of the car, the Toyota Corolla, where the second syllable sounds like roe (Kuh-ROE-Luh, /kəˈroʊlə/). You are forgiven the first time you pronounce it incorrectly but after we very politely correct you...we hope you say it the right way! The name refers to the botanic term for the petals of a flower.
What makes Corolla different from say, Nags Head or Kill Devil Hills? Well, there is only one road to get here for one thing. And it is two lanes. There are now two grocery stores up here that are open year 'round and a couple of restaurants that say open too.
Two of the most popular vacation communities are Corolla Light Resort and The Currituck Club. Both feature community pools, planned activities and houses and condos in different price ranges. The homes in The Currituck Club are located on the "other" (not oceanside) side of the island...and some are very large (eight or more bedrooms) and have every amenity one could ask for...movie rooms, hot tubs, golf privileges, big screen tvs, pool tables, and so on. Very popular community and yes, there are people who live there year 'round too.
One thing I have never done but want to do up here is take a wild horse tour and I have talked to Jay at Corolla Outback Adventures about it...when I finally get around to it I will update you. www.CorollaOutback.com
Lunch today was from Bunker's Grille in The Currituck Club. Nice place, small but never crowded. Because this is a family community this place is open every night and they offer a kids menu as well as special nights. Monday and Wednesdays...Family Dinners from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.
Tuesday and Thursdays: 5pm to 9m you can enjoy tapas, drinks and entertainment on the outdoor patio. Call if you are here in the off season to make sure these events and hours still apply. 252.453.0061
Nice place top go after a day at the beach or a round of golf. They serve lunch from 11 am to 3:30 pm.
