Fall Events On The Outer Banks

The Outer Banks Kite Festival will take place at Jockey’s Ridge State Park from September 9th to September 11th. Join the fun with free stunt and power kite lessons given by professional flyers. Spectators can enjoy incredible demonstrations set to music with synchronized performances.

Watch some of the best surfers on the east coast compete in the Easterns at Jennette’s Pier from September 18th through September 24th. Renowned as one of the top surfing competitions in the country, you can watch from the shore or the pier.

The Duck Jazz Festival will return this October 8th and 9th at the Duck Town Park, and this event is free to the public. Food and drinks are available to purchase from town eateries, and chairs are available for rent. Attendees may also bring food, coolers, chairs, blankets, and well-behaved dogs.

The OBX Marathon is the oldest (continuously held) race in the Outer Banks! Held from November 11th through the 13th, the road course is described as fast and flat, perfect for your first marathon or to set a personal record. Participants will enjoy the scenery along the islands of the Outer Banks. In addition to the full course length, you can register for different events, such as a half marathon, 8k, 5k, Southern 6, different Challenge combinations, relays, and the Fun Run (kids welcome). Registration is open until September 1st.

Locals (and our staff!) say that fresh Outer Banks seafood is one of the best parts of fall at the beach. Sweet greentail shrimp and oysters from local beds come in season during the fall and winter, and you’ll be spoiled after the first bite. Plan to attend the Outer Banks Seafood Festival on October 15th in Nags Head and celebrate our rich culinary heritage. Tickets are on sale now!

Wings Over Water features educational programs, lectures, and opportunities to get to know fellow birders from October 18th through October 24th. The Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is one of the best bird-watching destinations in the world. Attendees can also take part in guided birding trips, art and photography workshops, take a tram or kayak tour of the National Wildlife Refuge, and visit a maritime forest.

Enjoy live music from acclaimed bands at the Outer Banks Bluegrass Island Festival. This event takes place from October 20th through October 22nd at the Roanoke Island Festival Park stage. This year’s lineup includes well-known bands set to perform in the multi-day event.

Outdoor Fall Activities In The Outer Banks

Fall weather in the Outer Banks means the fish are biting, and it’s the perfect temperature for a round of golf. The possibilities to enjoy outdoor activities here are endless!

Book a charter to enjoy world-class offshore or inshore fishing. Access to the gulf stream and the opportunity to catch mahi, tuna, and wahoo is easy off our coast. You can also book a charter to catch shrimp and blue crabs (the kids will love this experience!). Surf fishing and pier fishing are also fun for the whole family.

You can play at highly rated champion and links-style courses from Nags Head to Corolla and the Currituck area. Finding an Outer Banks vacation rental located near a great course is easy with Village Realty. For example, homes on the sound side of the Village at Nags Head are clustered in different neighborhoods throughout the Nags Head Golf Links, offering beautiful views of the sound and the many ponds with abundant wildlife. Some homes feature modest golf villas and offer reduced greens fees and priority tee times.

Early fall is a great time to go on an OBX Lighthouse tour. The Bodie Island and Cape Hatteras lighthouses are typically open for climbing on a seasonal basis, and it’s best to plan to visit them from late April to September. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is undergoing renovations and may not be open for climbing in fall 2022, but you can follow the project status to plan your trip.

Try something unique and take an OBX Ghost Tour in downtown Manteo this October! You’ll discover more about Outer Banks’ history through this unconventional way to explore our area. Stories told by guides will keep your group thoroughly entertained.
