Local Perspective: 4th of July!
The 4th of July definitely makes my top three list for best holidays of the year, and is undeniably the best day of summer, but what is it about Independence Day that makes it so special? Most American families break out their best red, white, and blue outfits and celebrate with a day of cookouts, watermelon, fireworks, (and if you're lucky enough), the beach!
As a born and bred Nags Header, being at college in the mountains of Colorado means a long-distance relationship with the Atlantic. I soon realized after moving that it was the little things I missed about home, like the smell of salt air, the ocean view right outside my window every morning, and the soothing sound of the Atlantic in the quiet of the night. The best part of my summer is enjoying all the things I miss most about the Outer Banks while I'm off at school.
In my house, 4th of July is a family holiday consisting of burgers, hotdogs, lemonade, and dessert covered in every patriotic-colored fruit you can think of. My breakfast, lunch, and dinner consist of watermelon, watermelon, and more watermelon while basking in the sun with my dog. Friends and family come over for a beach bonfire, if its not too windy, and to watch the Nags Head fireworks conveniently located less that a half a mile away.
In a nutshell, 4th of July is the epitome of my perfect summer day at the beach. There's endless activities for everyone going on throughout the day this year, from Manteo to Nags Head, and Corolla. So for those of you lucky enough to share the banks with us this year, sit back, relax, and enjoy it!
