This is one of the most unique and historic properties on the entire Outer Banks, and now it can be yours! This property, rich with heritage, has endless possibilities. It is currently one large 30,238 sq foot property, but can potentially be subdivided into 2, 3, or 4 lots depending on whether or not you remove the current structures. Please ask listing agent for the preliminary plats.
The house, constructed by iconic Outer Banks builders John Wilson & George Twine, was finished in 1920. Please note that the house is not currently move in ready and extensive renovations/upgrades are needed to get the house up to livable conditions. There are over 45,000 bricks in the house which were brought to the property by horse and carriage from the docks of Downtown Manteo. All the features inside are original and have been preserved enough to be able to be reused if the house is to be renovated/rebuilt.
As you walk onto the property you are greeted by a grand covered porch. Once you step inside, to the right is the Parlor (front living room) and there is a piano that conveys with the house that has been in there since the 1920's. To the left is the dining room with a wood burning fireplace. Originally there was a large mirror that sat over the mantle and is still believed to be up in the rafters of the boathouse/barn in the back.
The dining room connects to a large pantry which also has the washer and dryer hookups. The pantry connects to the kitchen which remains completely original from the day it was built. The sinks and cabinets have been untouched and the tile floor (though in rough shape) remains the untouched. Across from the kitchen is the den, which is said to be the heart and soul of the house.
Later in the century it became the TV room and was a room that was meant for entertaining. The grand stair case will take you upstairs to the four bedrooms. The first room to the right has some sound views with built in shelves and a pocket desk that comes down from the wall. The northeast room has a walk in closet and is the only room that has direct access to the full bathroom, but was not considered the master when the house was built.
The southeast room has some sound views and also has access to the large attic, which gives for ample storage and room to add more modern amenities such as air conditioning. The "master" bedroom is located on the northwest side of the house, has a huge walk in closet and was the original owners room. The barn is located at the back of the property and was home to Davis Boatworks, established in 1932. The Davis's built world record holding racing boats out of that barn and also helped other local Manteo boat builders construct boats during World War II for the Navy.
The property is well maintained, with beautiful pecan and magnolia trees. This would be the perfect project for a buyer looking to restore a piece of Outer Banks history, making a great residential, second home or bed and breakfast. If renovations aren't your thing, this might be your only chance to own four build ready downtown Manteo lots. Call to schedule your appointment to view this today
