Labor Day has come and gone and while there are still many visitors here you can definitely see and feel the difference. The weather has been what I call “postcard perfect” and if you have never been here in September, October or even November…I encourage you to plan on doing so. Lower rates, restaurants open, slower pace and excellent weather. This is the time of year for local festivals, art shows, concerts, marathons and other good things on the Outer Banks.
So, what IS going on on the OBX?
Steamers Shellfish to Go, in Corolla, is closing on September 30…but just for a while. Then they will reopen in Southern Shores, at the Southern Shores Crossing Shopping Center to be exact. Steamers will be open year-round and serve lunch and dinner…a full-service restaurant and bar.
The fun, the wonderful, the down-home Outer Banks Bluegrass Festival is almost here…September 23-26th. Three days of music, good food and a simply incredible venue. Performances by Cherryholmes, Sam Bush, Rhonda Vincent, Lorrie Morgan, Steep Canyon Rangers …and more. This all takes place at Roanoke Island Festival Park. On Friday, the 25th, Boomgrass happens. This is the signature fireworks show that is choreographed to bluegrass music. If you don’t make it this year, keep it in mind for 2016, when the Soggy Bottom Boys will be playing.
Outer Banks Brewtag make a debut on October 3rd at the Soundside Event Site in Nags Head. Billed as a celebration of flight and beer, contestants will compete to see who can launch and fly an empty 1/6 keg barrel the furthest. Free Admission, family friendly too. Lots of local and regional beers and of course, food, will be available for purchase.
The 5th Annual Outer Banks Gay Pride Festival; September 15-20, includes lots of outdoor events, a music festival, pool party and more. First Colony Inn is the headquarters and there will lots of music, local vendors and family fun. Read more at www.OBXPridefest.com
Another new event, at least as far as I know, is the OBX Latin Festival, September 20th. This is the only Hispanic Heritage month celebration on the island. Authentic foods, dance and music and a marketplace with cultural wears…and activities for the entire family. The time is 11 am to 6 pm at the Nags Head Soccer Complex on West Satterfield Drive. Free admission. I think I might go to this one.
The 2nd Annual Outer Banks Halloween Parade of Costumes; fun! October 25 is the date and this year, there will be more prizes, more fun, more tricks and more treats. Live entertainment, prizes for best costumes, trick or treat stations, celebrity photo ops and more.
Halloween is a rather big deal here on the Outer Banks…and if you like to be scared, go to Psycho Path, on the grounds of the Lost Colony. Not recommended for small children or babies. You can get terrified every Friday and Saturday night in October. The first tour leaves at dark and the last ticket is sold at 11 pm. Wear good walking shoes.
The Duck Jazz Festival is another popular event, this years date is October 11, over Columbus Day Weekend. Free, no tickets…day long. Local, regional and local jazz musicians (we have some talented entertainers here) will be playing all day on two stages. Live music starts at 11 am and the gates open at 10 am. If you are bringing little ones with you, you can visit the Island Farm on Saturdays and ride in an ox-drawn wagon to the pumpkin patch. Pick that perfect pumpkin to take home. There are other activities too; candle making, stuff a scarecrow, children’s 19th-century toys and games, to name a few. Admission is $8; children ages 5 and under are free. Take home a pumpkin for an additional $5.
October 9 & 10…the Mustang Music Festival. At the Whalehead Club in Historic Corolla. Short Video. Beautiful setting, lots of live music. Rusted Root, Keller Williams & More Than a Little, Sister Sparrow, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, just to name a few. Great food, family fun, outstanding music. All on the Outer Banks, in October. Get here if you can. We have some vacation homes that are available for short stays. Take a look.
Most of the restaurants here will be open through October and many remain open until after Thanksgiving. And, some, thank goodness, are open all year. It is always a good idea during the off season, if you have a special place in mind, to call first and make sure that the business is open.
