"Three hundred and fifty years ago, the first English landed in Dare County, not far from the site of the Fourth Estate Cottage. In this unique land of romance and enchantment, destiny has continued to play a part until today it is the State's foremost outdoor seashore playground."
Experience Outer Banks history in the Fourth Estate Cottage. Built of timbers from shipwrecks and ballast stones from the Lost Colony, this home has welcomed visitors to the area since 1935.
At the time, the home was advertised as "equal to a modern city home, with lights, bath and lavatories in bedrooms". Since then, the owners have updated the modern conveniences somewhat, while still keeping the Old Nags Head charm. Guests can now enjoy central air conditioning, new washer and dryer and three updated baths, although the original bath on the main level boasts a claw foot tub for an authentic experience.
The Fourth Estate welcomes guests with its cozy cottage feel, including hardwood floors and brightly painted walls with natural wood trim. The fully modern kitchen has a rustic kitchen table, plus there is a dining table in the great room. The fireplace is currently decorative only, and is not available for guest use. There is one bedroom on the main floor, and four bedrooms upstairs that share the two new baths.
