Driving on the Beach

Many of our many visitors come here planning to spend some time driving on the beach on at The Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Well, we want to make sure you know that you need a permit and give you some information you need. An Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) Management Plan for the Cape Hatteras National Seashore went into effect in February of 2012. New regulations now require that you have to have permit in order to drive on designated ORV routes.

Where can you get a permit? At the NPS permit office at Coquina Beach, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Center in Buxton and the Ocracoke Visitor Center. The offices are open daily from 8 am to 4:30 pm all year and offer expanded hours seasonally.

You will have to watch a 7 minute educational video--shown at the office--in order to get a permit.

Cost is $120 per year (calendar year) or a 7 day permit is available for $50.00
