The Town of Nags Head stretches from Milepost 10 to 22. The area south of Milepost 16.5 known as South Nags Head is primarily residential and backs up to Pea Island Wildlife Refuge, allowing a feeling of being away from it all yet within minutes of the action. The Town of Nags Head has over 30 public beach accesses with ample parking for your convenience and several sound side water access points.
Catch the sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean and enjoy a day at the beach splashing in the waves. Climb the largest sand dunes on the East Coast to take in the surrounding views, and then enjoy a relaxing late-day stroll along the sandy banks of Roanoke Sound behind Jockey's Ridge State Park. The Multi-Use Path along the Beach Road (Highway 12) is a wide, smooth path great for jogging, biking, skating and the Nags Head Walking Tour through historic Cottage Row. Adventure-seekers have choices galore in Nags Head. Go diving and explore the many shipwreck remains accessible from the beach, like the Huron just north of Nags Head Fishing Pier. Hike more than five miles of trails through a 1400-acre maritime forest at Nags Head Woods Preserve. Take an air tour over Bodie Island Lighthouse and other historic sites in the area or head out toward the Gulf Stream by charter boat for a day of world-class fishing. Wind and water sports enthusiasts can take their pick from hang gliding, kayaking and canoeing to windsurfing, parasailing, kiteboarding and more!
To the north of Nags Head are the Towns of Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Duck and Corolla.
