The charming and friendly town of Manteo is located on Roanoke Island and part of the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Manteo has a charm all its own and a definite small town atmosphere. The waterfront offers outstanding views of the Roanoke Sound and there are locally owned shops and restaurants to accommodate any taste or mood.
Fast forward about thirty years from the fictional town of Mayberry made famous by Andy Griffith, who really lives here!
Each summer Manteo welcomes back the actors, singers and dancers who perform in the longest running outdoor drama in the United States; The Lost Colony.
From April to December, the town hosts "First Fridays" on the first Friday of the month. Live music and family fun make this an anticipated event for local residents and visitors alike. Most of the shops and restaurants usually offer something special on these days.
Make sure you visit the Elizabethan Gardens and Roanoke Island Festival Park while you are here. Wear your sneakers and make a day of it, there are many art galleries and specialty shops where you can find that perfect gift to take home or keep for yourself.
Dont forget the Aquarium! The kids will love seeing the otters, sharks, alligators and even some sharks. The "Touch Tank" is a favorite for kids of all ages.
Manteo is also where the Dare County Airport is located. Located right on the waters edge, the airport offers an open air pavilion on the Roanoke Sound, picnic tables, grills and a restroom.
