Known as home of the first heavier-than-air powered flight by Wilbur and Orville Wright back in 1903, Kill Devil Hills was once just a series of continually shifting sand dunes like those still remaining at nearby Jockey's Ridge. Today the Town of Kill Devil Hills is one of the most popular vacation destinations on the Outer Banks. Vacationers are drawn to its magnificent beaches, distinctive history, endless activities and unique variety of shops and restaurants, as well as its central location along the Outer Banks.
The Town of Kill Devil Hills spans Milepost 5 to Milepost 10 and offers a great variety of vacation accommodations, from large properties several families can share to townhomes, condos, and single-family houses perfect for smaller groups and couples. There are 25 public beach accesses with ample parking for your convenience, several sound side water accesses, as well as community parks.
Visible for miles and a must-see for all is Wright Brothers National Memorial at Milepost 8. Visitors will enjoy a centennial pavilion of special exhibits, replica camp buildings, full-scale flyer reproductions, and panoramic ocean to sound views from atop the 90-foot high Kill Devil Hill where a 61-foot granite monument stands. Many wonder about the true origin of the "Kill Devil" name on which the Hill at the Memorial and the Town are based. One legend suggests it originated with pirates who once called these shores home and the moonshine they drank which was "strong enough to kill the devil." Another holds that it came from a colonial period brand of rum found washed ashore here, the only surviving cargo from a nameless shipwreck.
Opportunities for an unforgettable vacation experience abound here. From exhilarating land and sea excursions like fishing, golfing and surfing - to enriching cultural and historical venues such as lighthouses, museums and live theater – to the captivating natural beauty of unspoiled coastline, wildlife refuges, maritime forests and untouched estuaries.
To the north of Kill Devil Hills are the Towns of Kitty Hawk, Duck and Corolla. To its south are Nags Head and historic Roanoke Island where the whole family will enjoy sites like Fort Raleigh, the NC Aquarium and Elizabethan Gardens. Further down is the Cape Hatteras National Seashore which extends more than 70 miles south and offers attractions like Chicamacomico Life Saving Station, windsurfing hot spot "Canadian Hole," as well as picnic areas, camping and seasonal interpretive programs.
Stay in Kill Devil Hills and be in the center of all that makes the Outer Banks such a breathtaking and extraordinary place to visit again and again.
