Uniquely Outer Banks Restaurants

Sam & Omie’s

Nags Head Milepost 16.5 on the Beach Road
Locally owned for 73 years, Sam & Omie’s really is the Nags Head gathering place for locals and visitors. Durinda from Marketing enjoys “the atmosphere and the best Hatteras-style clam chowder anywhere!” Ruth Ann from Nags Head Sales also mentions the “friendly and warm atmosphere of old Nags Head, great food, perfect spot for breakfast, lunch or casual dinner. Favorites are shrimp burger, soft shell sandwich (in season), chicken salad and pimento cheese sandwich.”

Blue Moon Beach Grill

SurfSide Plaza, Nags Head milepost 13 beach road
This little place in an unassuming location has taken the locals by storm. We can’t seem to say enough good things about it. Here’s an example: Emily from Association Management says “The Blue Moon’s grilled crab cake Caesar salad is so good I have been dreaming about it.”

Tortuga's Lie

Nags Head MP 11 on the Beach Road
No other restaurant seems to inspire loyalty like Tortuga’s! Of course they have been here since 1989 so they must be doing something right. Ruth Ann recommends the Salmon Salad du Jour, while Karen from Nags Head Sales loves ”the fish specials and I think they have the best fried oysters on the beach.” But it’s Bill from Corolla Reservations who feels really strongly about his recommendation: “Sushi is the number one reason. I bet 9 out of the last 10 times I have been there; it’s been on a Wednesday night for sushi. I know they have a good menu, and everyone I have gone with has enjoyed the food. I know they make more sauces and entrees from scratch then most, but I have had so few of them because I always go for the sushi.”

Mama Kwan’s

Kill Devil Hills milepost 9.5 on the bypass
You have never tasted anything like Mama Kwans! They describe their cuisine as a fusion including borrowed tastes from the Pacific Rim - Hawaii, Japan, Thailand and others. Leslie and Linda recommend Kwan’s based on the fun atmosphere, great menu and good prices, while Jeannie says to try to fish tacos. Other unique favorites are the Thai money bags and anything that includes the marinated cucumbers.

Food Dudes

Kill Devil Hills Milepost 8.5 on the Beach Road
Krista from Corolla Reservations rarely misses a Thursday $1 taco night, especially because of the unique ingredients: “I love their blackened chicken tacos with smoked Gouda. And, I always get a grilled fish taco of some sort (Rockfish if they have it but Mahi is also yummy) and this is accompanied by a wonderful jicama slaw. They have a terrific Sunday brunch…and literally do not close until the last person strolls in… Although it is a neat, little surfer spot, it really will make a BIG impression on you!”

Jolly Roger

Kill Devil Hills milepost 6.5 on the beach road
If you want sophisticated cuisine in a contemporary dining environment, don’t go to the Jolly Roger. However, if you want to experience an Outer Banks institution and a bit of local color, by all means, check it out! Open all day from breakfast to late night karaoke. Lunch specials, daily beer specials, really good homemade breads, crazy décor, gift shop, and did I mention local color?

Capt’n Franks

Kitty Hawk milepost 4.5 on the bypass
This little hot dog shack has seen the beach grow up around it, and hasn’t changed a bit! Hot dogs: specialty dogs, corn dogs and more hot dogs. Get a bag and take them to the beach, or sit outside and soak in the goodness of something so simple done so right. And get a T-shirt while you’re there.
