Our Favorite Ethnic Restaurants

Japanese

Asian Bistro

Kitty Hawk milepost 4 on the bypass
New to the Outer Banks in 2010, the Asian Bistro offers something for everyone: Chinese (including Szechuan, Cantonese and Mandarin), Thai, Japanese, with a sprinkling of other Asian cuisines. Also sushi and vegetarian options.
3723 N. Croatan Hwy, Kill Devil Hills
252-207-3390

Fuji

Kill Devil Hills milepost 9 on the bypass
Japanese steak house. You get the full experience, including the chef cooking at your table, playing with knives and the ever-popular volcano. Some kids love this. Some don’t. They also have a sushi bar.
1201 S Croatan Hwy, Kill Devil Hills
252-449-0628

Taiko

Outer Banks Mall, Nags Head milepost 13.5 on the bypass
Sushi and only sushi. Try one of the sushi lunch boxes served with house salad (love the ginger dressing), seaweed salad, and a spring roll.
5000 S Croatan Hwy, Nags Head
252-449-8895

Thai

Thai Room

Kill Devil Hills milepost 8.5 on the beach road
Family owned and operated, with a very friendly staff. Real, fresh ingredients from scratch, with Chinese and American cuisine in addition to Thai.

French

Colington Cafe

Colington Road, turn west at milepost 8 in KDH, it’s a mile on the left.

Kill Devil Hills Milepost 7.5 on the Beach Road
Don’t judge, just go. Situated in a little cottage under sprawling live oaks, Colington Café is unassuming to say the least, yet it is consistently voted one of the best on the Outer Banks. French cuisine prepared with the freshest local ingredients. Reasonable prices. What more do you need to know? Just go.

The Pearl

In the Sea Ranch, Kill Devil Hills milepost 7 on the beach road
One of the few oceanfront dining experiences left on the Outer Banks. Jackie from Nags Head Sales says The Pearl “has fantastic local seafood cooked in the French style.” They also offer a lunch menu and Sunday brunch.

Mexican

Bad Bean Taqueria

TimBuckII in Corolla and Seagate North in KDH
“Tasty fish tacos, yummy pork tacos, quesadillas and let us not forget the fine margaritas!!” says Laura from Nags Head Reservations. The Timbuck II location is more of a taco stand, while the one in Kill Devil Hills has a bar and generous dining room. The burritos are huge. Just don’t go expecting Tex-Mex - instead think Baja California.

La Fogata

Nags Head milepost 14 on the bypass
La Fogata is aptly summed up by Linda in Human Resources as “genuine Mexican cuisine, fast & cheap”. What more do you need to know? Lunch and dinner, family owned and operated.
5002 S Croatan Hwy, Nags Head
252-441-4179

Caribbean

Tortuga’s

This place is popular for a lot of reasons, including Wednesday sushi nights, but Caribbean cuisine is their specialty. Ruth Ann recommends the Salmon Salad du Jour, while Karen from Nags Head Sales loves ”the fish specials and I think they have the best fried oysters on the beach.”

Pacific Rim

Mama Kwan’s

Kill Devil Hills Milepost 7.5 on the Beach Road

It’s all good at Mama Kwan’s. They describe their cuisine as a fusion including borrowed tastes from the Pacific Rim - Hawaii, Japan, Thailand and others. Leslie and Linda recommend Kwan’s based on the fun atmosphere, great menu and good prices, while Jeannie says to try to fish tacos. Other unique favorites are the Thai money bags, the garbage plate with tuna and anything that includes the marinated cucumbers.

Rundown Cafe

Okay, this could just as easily have been under Caribbean, but we had to pick one! Rundown is named after a traditional Jamaican soup, but serves a wonderful fusion of cuisine inspired by Californian, Mexican, Thai and Polynesian flavors. I recommend the coconut fried chicken salad with extra Journey’s End dressing, and a seat on the upper deck with an ocean view.
