Hurricanes and the Outer BanksHurricane Watch A Hurricane Watch means that a hurricane may threaten the area within 24 to 36 hours. Hurricanes are tropical storms with winds exceeding 74 miles per hour. A storms strength or category is determined by its wind speed. Hurricane Warning A Hurricane Warning means that a hurricane is expected to strike the area within 24 hours. What to do in the Event of a Hurricane In the event of an approaching storm we will update this page with current information and status, so please check back frequently. Visit the Important Links on the right side of this page for the most up-to-date storm information as well as for hurricane preparedness, travel protection insurance, and re-entry information. Stay tuned to local television and listen to these FM radio stations for information and updates:
Make sure your information source broadcasts all official bulletins from the National Weather Service and Dare and Currituck counties. Keep your car filled with gas in case an evacuation becomes necessary. Keep a few gallons of bottled water in your car. Anticipate heavy rains and strong winds prior to an approaching storm and plan accordingly. Dont panic. The order to leave will be given in plenty of time by county officials for you to leave safely. In the event of an evacuation, you must bring your keys to our office and inform us of your departure. Remember, please take all food and belongings with you when you leave. Any food that is left behind will be either thrown away (if perishable) or donated to our local food bank when A Village Realty employee comes to the house to secure it before the storm. What to do in the Event of a Mandatory Evacuation If a mandatory evacuation order has been issued for the counties of Dare and/or Currituck, you must leave. Pack up all of your belongings including food; come to our office to return your keys and notify us of your departure, and leave as soon as possible. Evacuation routes are well marked with blue evacuation route signs. The earlier you leave the better as traffic increases the closer a storm gets. Do not adopt a "wait and see" attitude after an evacuation order has been issued. If you delay, roads and bridges become congested with traffic and high winds and possible flooding could leave you trapped. Ferry service ceases with the onset of gale force winds, so please take this into consideration. Once an officially declared evacuation is issued then the Swan Quarter and Cedar Island ferries no longer accept or honor any reservations; it is all first come first served. If you are traveling south and/or west please do not wait thinking that you will be able to catch the ferry at the last minute. There are no shelters in Dare County, Currituck County or Hyde County. Inland shelter locations will be broadcast on local radio and TV stations as a storm approaches. If you are not planning on going all the way home and need hotel accommodations inland we advise that you call and make reservations as soon as possible. Depending on the severity and length of a storm and any storm damage, you may not be allowed back in the area. For more hurricane preparedness and re-entry information, please visit the Important Links on the right side of this page. Trip Insurance If you purchased trip insurance, then you will be reimbursed for any vacation time lost due to a mandatory evacuation. Please remember that it must be a mandatory evacuation. If you choose to leave due to inclement weather, you may not be eligible for a refund. Village Realty will provide a form for you to complete and file with the trip insurance company to receive your refund. If you have any questions concerning trip insurance, please call Red Sky at 1-866-621-2070.
