"The exhilaration of flying is too keen, the pleasure too great, for it to be neglected as a sport." ~Orville Wright On October 24, 1911 Orville Wright’s historic glider flight took place on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The flight lasted nine minutes and forty-five seconds and heralded in the arrival of modern soaring. Soaring 100 celebrates the international celebration of this flight and exciting activities are planned from October 21-24, 2011 at both Jockey’s Ridge and the Wright Brothers National Monument. It is expected that organizations from around the world will be participating in this event and visitors can expect to see a sailplane fly-in, modern and vintage glider displays and special demonstrations at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills. Teams from Kansas, Maryland and Virginia built three production 1911 gliders especially for the occasion and will be flying them at Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head. The First Flight Foundation announced its support and involvement for the 100th Anniversary of Soaring in August of 2010. John Harris, President of FFF says “It is fitting that our foundation participate in a significant way in planning this event as our primary purpose is to improve the visitor experience at Wright Brothers National Memorial and help tell the story of the lives and character of the Wright Brothers.”
