2012 Event and Course Information

First Flight 5K

The First Flight 5K course takes you UP to the Wright Brothers National Monument where you will see some spectacular views of the Outer Banks.

• Date: Saturday, April 21, 2012
• Start Time: 8:00 a.m.
• Entry Fee: $25.00 through April 2. $35.00 at the Expo.
• Runner Cap: 350
• Discounted entry fee when you do both the 5K and the half-marathon.

FYI: Out-and-back course. Walker-Friendly

The National Park Services allows Outer Banks Sporting Events to offer runners a road race on park service property. Participants will run up and around the Wright Brothers Memorial and along the same path that the famous Wright brothers, Wilbur and Orville, took on their first flight.

Flying Pirate Half Marathon

• Start Time: 7:00 a.m. Course time limit is 5 hours.
• Entry Fees:
  • $65 until January 11, 2012
  • $75 January 12 - April 2, 2012
  • $85 after April 2
  • $100 at the Expo
• FYI: Walker-Friendly. Purse prize.
• Course: Varied terrain including pavement, dirt road, mulch on trail and some sand.
• Runner Cap: 2500
• Discounted entry fee when you do both the 5K and the half-marathon.

Runners will be covering some unique and spectacular grounds as they begin in Kitty Hawk and head towards the Wright Brothers Monument. First though, they run down Bay Drive where Outer Banks locals will be cheering them on.

Near mile 8 the run takes you to the base of the momument...which marks the place where the first flight took place in 1903.

Two miles you enter the Nags Head Woods Nature Preserve which offers all the beauty of trail running along a well-packed, dirt road.

You leave Nags Head Woods at about the 12 mile point and contine on a narrow trail with off road conditions. You are on the home stretch.

After a day of running all pirates need a place to rest their heads.

Village Realty will be offering a limited number of OBXRunners Packages. Information will be posted here as soon as we finalize the details. Many of the Outer Banks vacation rental homes we manage do permit "short stays" so if you can't stay a week you can still get a nice house or comfortable condo for your two or three night stays.

The package for the Flying Pirate/First Flight 5K Events will include a gift certificate to a local restaurant (Kelly's or Lucky 12) and some other "extras" we decide on.
