OUTER BANKS BLOG - February 2012Wednesday, February 29, 2012
As many people know the real estate market has been a tough way to make a living in the last few years. Credit has been tight and the economy has been rough...forcing a lot of short sales and foreclosures. However, things seem to be looking up some...at least here on the Outer Banks. In the past few weeks I have seen about six new homes going up between Milepost 7 and Milepost 14. I usually take the Beach Road to and from work and started hearing hammering and seeing construction trucks and crews. This is a welcome sight. Back in the day...maybe eight or nine years ago...maybe a little longer...there were new homes popping up like mushrooms all over the OBX. Big homes, a lot of them, seemed to be the most popular of the new properties but there were also condos and smaller properties as well. Most of these were second homes.

One place that you may not have been to or even be aware of is the Island Farm on Roanoke Island (Manteo)... a living history site that interprets daily life in Manteo as it was in the mid 1800's. The centerpiece of the site is the old Etheridge farmstead. Adam Etheridge build a house on land that had been farmed by members of his family since 1757. The house includes 19th century furnishings and some of these are original to the house.

The 27th Bayview Chapel Oyster Feast was held last Saturday in Stumpy Point. According to one of our co-workers (and photographer) this was an incredible event. Melody said it was packed all the way to 4:30 pm with cars as far as you could see and many out of state license plates. Melody sat next to two couples from Williamsburg VA who came here just for this event.

We are always happy to help new businesses here at the Village and this venture sounds like it could really do well. For those of you who have been here in the summer you may have noticed that the mosquitos, sometimes, can be very annoying. This was especially true after the last hurricane when there was a lot of standing water.
