January is probably the most quiet month on the OBX. The holidays are over, and any business that stayed open to capture those visitors has closed...including some restaurants and hotels. There did seem to be a lot more visitors here over Christmas and NY than in years past and other locals said the same thing. Great! The weather was very nice and there was plently to do and see. We have seen this trend tick up over the past three to four years...as more people realize that this is a nice way to spend the holidays with family.

Now is when locals will see each other at favorite restaurants that are open year 'round (and we are very appreciative of those who do remain open) and shop at the grocery store during the day and generally kick back just a bit.

If you wonder what could we possibly find to do ... I will tell you. Oysters! We love oysters yes we do, raw steamed fried or in a stew. Big salty local oysters. Kelly's, Mulligan's, Lucky 12 are all featuring them on their menus. Yum

Movies...we have a fairly new and very nice movie theater in Kill Devil Hills with 10 movies showing daily!

Bowling...wonderful bowling alley in Nags Head. Clean and large and lots of fun.

Beach walking unless it is just too windy or cold. Shell hunting, beach glass hunting and reflection time.

The YMCA offers lots to do for everyone including a skateboard park, pool, exercise, yoga and more.

Many locals are training for one of the many marathons/races later this year.

If you absolutely must get off the island...the big city is only 90 minutes away. Norfolk VA where you can find shops to your hearts content. If that is your thing.
