The OBX is very active in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life and the 2012 event is set for May 19 and May 20 at First Flight High School in Kill Devil Hills, NC. The theme this year is "Carnival for a Cure" and many local teams have been working hard to bring in contributions.

Nags Head Woods 5K Race and Village Realty Fun Run

This is the 29th year for the annual Nags Head Woods 5K Race and the Village Realty Fun Run. Both races take place in The Nature Conservancy's Nags Head Woods Ecological Preserve. This is an out-and-back course that covers gently rolling terrain on hard packed dirt. The North Beach Rotary hosts the race and all net proceeds benefit local charities, scholarships and military relief charities.

Anna Jarvis is the founder of Mother's Day. In 1906, the year after her own mother died, Jarvis began her campaign for one day a year when all Americans would celebrate their mothers. She got the word out through church meetings, writing letters to govt representatives and businessmen. Within three years almost all of the 46 states were observing Mother's Day and it became a national holiday in 1914.
